                    Poetry

I and My Broken Wings

I like butterfly
Without beautiful wings
And someone who saw me
Only with one eye
I know what my shortage and my weakness
I realize it,
That I’m not as nice as the other butterfly.
I want to be like them,
That can fly wherever they want
Without load and without a flaw.
Oh god! make it happen true and
Please wipe sadness in my heart,
I want to be happy!
Although with my broken wings.

Poetry II
As I grew older
It was a long time ago.
I have almost forgotten my dream.
But it was there then,
In front of me,
Bright like a sun—
My dream.
And then the wall rose,
Rose slowly,
Slowly,
Between me and my dream.
Rose until it touched the sky—
The wall.
Shadow.
I am black.
I lie down in the shadow.
No longer the light of my dream before me,
Above me.
Only the thick wall.
Only the shadow.
My hands!
My dark hands!
Break through the wall!
Find my dream!
Help me to shatter this darkness,
To smash this night,
To break this shadow
Into a thousand lights of sun,
Into a thousand whirling dreams
Of sun!
                                                                                                            Langston Hughes

SUMMARY
1. Write the summary of the poetry! (in the form of paragraph(s))
Langston Hughes ‘As I Grew Older’ begins about a dream that the poet had ‘long time ago.’ The poet says his dream, bright as the sun, was right in front of him until a wall rose between him and his dream. The poet is an old man now and he is thinking about his dream which he dreamt long time ago. He thinks he has almost forgotten his dream. He remembers that his dream was not fulfilled as a strong barrier was created by his fellow white people who will not let his dream come true. The wall seems to grow forever and ever and it has become it has become so taller that it ‘rose until it touched the sky.’ The dream which was as bright as the sun has now turned dark. The wall has become a long dark shadow and has been blocking his dream. The dream being replaced by a shadow, the poet has become black.
The poet lies down beside the shadow which means he feels defeated and helpless. He finds that his dream is no longer above him and so he feels vanquished. Instead of his dreams, he finds the ‘thick wall’ and the ‘shadow’ above him. A plausible interpretation can be that the dream of freedom and independence is no longer real for the blacks and it has been overshadowed by the wall created by the fellow white people.
‘Dark hands’ refers to the poet’s own hands, the color of his skin, who will be able to ‘break through the wall’ and ‘find his dream.’
The poet wants to break the wall and shatter the darkness that is keeping him from attending his dream. He wants to break the shadow into thousand lights of sun and thousands of whirling dreams.

2. What is the impact of the whole poem for you?
Answer: -We more complate the life
-Better appreciate the time in achieving the dream

3. Does it successfully achieve the poet's purpose or is it flawed in some serious way?
Answer: Yes, it does.

Definition of Ballads

The word Ballad is of French provenance. It is a type of poetry or verse which was basically used in dance songs in the ancient France. Later on, during the late 16th and 17th century, it spread over the majority of European nations. Owing to its popularity and emotional appeal, it remained a powerful tool for poets and lyricists to prepare music in the form of lyrical ballads and earn a handsome income from it.
The art of Lyrical ballad as well as Ballad poetry lost popularity during the latter half of the 19th century. However, it is still read and listened to with interest in most of European countries including the British Isles.
A Ballad is a poem that tells a story, which are often used in songs because of their rhyme. A ballad is a poetic story, often a love story.

Example 1
“Tam Lin” is an example of a popular (traditional) ballad.
‘O I forbid you, maiden all,
That wears gold in your hair,
To come or go by Carterhaugh
For young Tam Lin is there.

Example 2
“Rime of an Ancient Mariner” is an example of a lyrical ballad.
‘Day after day, day after day
We stuck nor breathe, nor motion;
As idle as a painted ship
Upon a painted ocean’

Example 3
“Stagolee” is an example of a blue ballad with roots in American folk music.
Stagolee was a bad man
They go down in a coal mine one night
Robbed a coal mine
They’s gambling down there’

Example 4
“Drover” is an example of a bush ballad.
‘From the sunburnt plains of far off North Australia
Came a fella born to ride the wide brown land
Oh he grew up running wil
But soon by all was styled
As the country’s greatest-ever droving man’

Example 5
“The Ballad of Billy the Kid” is an example of a modern ballad.
‘From a town known Wheeling, Wes Virginia
Rode a boy with six gun in his hands
And his daring life crime
Made him a legend in his time
East and west of Rio Grande’

Example of a Ballad Poem

As I was walking down the street
I saw two people in secret meet
The second one said to the first
'You have some news to quench my thirst?'

'In behind the old, damp shed
There lies a noble man slain, dead
And no one knows he lies in strife
Except his dog and lonely wife

With master gone where no one knocks
His dog has left to chase a fox
His wife has found somebody new
His house is left for all to view

Though it's been empty for a while
We'll be warm and dry in half a mile
For now we can take comfort there
We'll flee the place when it grows bare

Many people knew the noble man
But none do care where he has gone
Over his grave, all do ignore
The wind shall blow forever more.'
